Home treatment is typically all that is needed for a sore throat caused by a virus. These tips may help you feel better.

 

  • Gargle with warm salt water to help reduce swelling and relieve uneasiness which happens from sore throat.
  • If you have postnasal drip, gargle often to prevent more sore throat irritation.
  • To prevent dehydration during flu. Fluids may help thin secretions and soothe an irritated sore throat. Hot fluids may help decrease sore throat irritation.
  • Use a vaporizer or humidifier in your bedroom to fight flu and sore throat.
  • Warm or cool mist may help you feel more at ease by soothing the sore throat. It may also relieve croakiness.
  • Use a shallow pan of water to provide moisture in the air through evaporation if you don’t have a humidifier at home.
  • Do not smoke or use other products and avoid secondhand smoke to help sore throat.
  • If you suspect that problems with stomach acid may be causing your sore throat, then see a doctor.
  • Consider taking nonprescription medicine for your sore throat and flu symptoms.
  • Regular cough drops may also help in sore throat condition.
  • Use a decongestant for sore throat.
  • Don’t give decongestants to a child younger than 2 except when you’ve checked with the doctor first. If your child’s doctor tells you to give a medicine, be sure to follow what they tell you to do.

Sore throats can be painful and annoying. Fortunately, most sore throats are caused by a minor illness and go away without medical treatment.
